Top Ten News Stories by Live Action News – Online

There have been many developments over the years to make the news seem more important with a 24 hour news cycle. At the same time news has become so ubiquitous that it is in your face constantly and except for my addiction the news seems less important because I can get it everywhere I go. Also news sites that compile the stories, much like a TV Station used to do, are also able to compile print media in such a way that the news is sorted whenever and wherever you want. What would be the point of having another news site linking to news that is already everywhere? No point, it doesn’t seem to be a necessary product for the media market.

The enjoyment I get from reading the news is similar to the joy I used to get when I was a kid delivering newspapers, like there is information about what goes on in the world and if I read it then I am privy to an understanding of the times we live in. The combination of news stories that I read in a given day make up my feeling about the times and the zeitgeist that we live with. I am going to try a quick version of the linking to news by reducing it to ten links a day, direct links, and see if I can make a sort of historical document of the news that summarized each day as I go through it.

Ten seems to be like a good number of news articles, but I am not going to worry about being exact. Each day I’ll create a page or a posting that will be added to as the day goes on. I’ll republish the front page on TopTenNewsStories.com and see if it builds any relevance that makes it worth continuing. Comments and opinions on the news may be kept here at Live Action News.com with individual stories getting a sort of editorial review just for the fun of it. Ten a day, can I do it? I only have nine loosely organized categories for the news, so something will get duplicated if I tried to do one for each category. Still it won’t be that hard if I don’t waste time editorializing everything I come across.

The Olympics 2012 in London – Flying Queens and Bad Bad Mintons

The Concorde by Air France tickets are a good deal to the Olympics 2012

The Concorde by Air France tickets are a good deal to the Olympics 2012

I was a little distracted over the last few weeks and did not get to cover the Olympics in London as I had hoped. My Supersonic flight on the Concorde was cancelled, apparently I booked through an agent in Nigeria, but I didn’t know these plans didn’t fly anymore. I don’t think I’ll be getting my $5000 deposit back either, darn. The TV was not broadcasting the events in real time, so I don’t think it is that important to watch things that aren’t really happening when I can just read about them on the internet before they are even shown on TV. I refuse to report on News that isn’t live-action anyway. And there is a financial crisis in Europe which doesn’t bode well for partying and pub crawls in the Olympic Village while other people are suffering. The two things I remember reading about on the internet are the Flying Queen, too bad it wasn’t the real Queen and the Badminton competition gone bad, very bad. The players at the Badminton competition at the Olympics were playing to lose. I’m sure the bookies were pissed about that. Can you imagine the odds if you knew the fix was in? It’s not like they were doing it on purpose, it’s just they were going to have to face China if they won, so it was more competitive to lose in the earlier rounds except that nobody wanted to win, so they just kept playing to see who could lose first. Fantastic.

America’s Cup of Fortune or a Bay Area Farce?

America's Cup in San Francisco Defend Defeat Prevail

I have always loved the fundamentals of the America’s Cup regatta and the long history of the Cup itself, but over the years the America’s Cup has attempted to become a caricature of yacht racing. The idea that multi-hull boats are being used, along with excessive amount of advertisements on the sail and that a natural arena will now allow millions of people to see the actual races themselves will either bring the sport to greater heights of success or separate yacht racing even further from reality. The San Francisco Bay is the next location for the America’s Cup races and this will be the first time that people will be able to watch from all around the Bay instead of having to travel out to Sea to watch the actual races. Here is a link to a broadcast that would be most like the average person trying to watch a sailboat race. Please watch this video to the end, it’s worth it.  http://www.thatvideosite.com/v/5852

The fact is that the America’s Cup should be profitable for the City as it is a once-in-a-lifetime event, should the United States lose then it would be, with the beautiful skyline and geometry of the Bay as the background to a world famous competitive event. There are no tickets to be sold, except for some people who want to say they “officially” attended and the America’s Cup has to pay the networks to cover their event, versus other Sporting Events that pay boatloads of money to get the rights to show things like the World Series or the Supper Bowl. The America’s Cup is not a sport that your average American gives a shit about and they are definitely not going to go Pay-per-View or have barbeque parties with their friends so that they can watch plastic wrapped football player type guys get wet on tv, not so much fun. Oh, what to do? Recognize that the benefits of this type of event will translate to an atmosphere of curiosity and awe while it is going on, but it just does not relate to other spectator sports with a captive audience.

This is not to say that the America’s Cup won’t be a bonus for business people around the Bay Area, it should be as all of the restaurants with seating on the water will be booked six months in advance and charter boats won’t have any problem filling up with daily trips out to see the races, but overall it’s a postcard event with some local benefits. I went online to see if there were any employment opportunities with the America’s Cup event and found this article: America’s Cup layoffs affect half of San Francisco staff

America's cup photo

The Cup – America’s cup photo

This new enhanced Cup looks much bigger than the original cup that I found photos of on Wikipedia. I wonder if it has been made bigger to try and make the stature of the event seem bigger? Maybe the cup is only big enough to hold a beer or two, I can’t really tell. It is more of a decanter if you look at it. Not really for drinking out of like a real cup, unless of course you are Zeus and require a pour when you drink. This could’ve been the equivalent of a beer bong back in the day when it was made. That would explain a lot about the cup itself, which should be referred to as more of a hooka than a cup. Ah, those were the days.

Sorry for the long delay – posting will resume soon

There has been an  unplanned hiatus on this LiveActionNews.com website due to technical difficulties in updating and administering this Word Press application. The situation has been fixed, so although the news shown here is a bit out-dated, we will do what we can to fill in the blanks and catchup.

There have been a few major Breaking News stories that we have missed here at Live Action News, including the increase in violence in Syria, the Olympic Games, a Mass Shooting at a Batman Movie theater in Colorado and the continuing decay of the economic fundamentals in the World. I can only say that commenting on the news doesn’t fix or change any of that, but I can say that I miss making snide comments about topical events. Hopefully I can catch up with a bit of retrospective comments and keep the ball rolling for this site.

Learning to Gamble on Sports and Sporting Events – Over Under

My first task at learning to bet on Sporting events brings up the issue of over and under. I think that sporting events are typically a one-to-one bet, for each dollar you bet you get one dollar in return, with advantages and disadvantages being made by the house, the casino where a wager is placed, by giving points to underdog teams. In order to win a bet your team may have to win, as well as, beat the over or under point advantage. This may be referred to as a spread, or point spread. I think that most sporting events, like Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey and possibly Soccer are handled in this way. The Sportsbook, or house, also takes a percentage of any bet. I think it comes out of the winnings, which means it is a percentage of what comes back to the player, but I am not sure about that.

Horse racing is different, because there are so many potential outcomes for the odds and payouts, but that isn’t the basis of this story, although I have heard you can place bets on horse racing over your computer these days or with phone calls.

Gambling on Sports – the most popular game in town – online casinos

I’ve spent some time in the past betting on horses, back in the day, when you had to go to a track and actually look at the horses. Never had a bookie, but that always sounded fun to be able to call a number and put down a few bucks on a long shot then wait to see who won the next day. Nowadays there are all types of ways to bet on things, including fantasy betting environments. I am not willing to spend huge amounts of time figuring out systems for different betting scenarios, so I have stayed away from these gaming rooms, until  now. My standard for online betting restricts me from working with most of the online games and casinos that I’ve seen because I just don’t trust sending my money into a computer somewhere and hoping that I’m going to get something back with a few clicks of the mouse. Even the poker rooms seem like you can’t trust the backside of a computer you can’t see.

There is the fact that if you are competing in a forum with other “real” people, then it may be reasonable to place a few wagers. Or if you can place online bets for sporting events, without having to drive to Nevada, and the odds are posted ahead of time, then I can’t see how you can get screwed, unless they just don’t pay you. As well, the Fantasy Baseball, Football and Basketball type pools may be a fair gaming system that allows people to indirectly bet and compete against others for money or prizes that may be worth money.

My travels here are going to be to test and compare some of the gaming rooms, casinos and online betting systems for sports and poker to see if my apprehensions are still valid.
